Description

This beautiful White Raven Bentwood Box is by Kwakwaka wakw artist Trevor Hunt. This Bentwood box has sides of yellow cedar and a lid and base of red cedar. It has been sandblasted and painted in white acrylic and features four contemporary designs on each side. Two sides of the red cedar box lid are finished with three mother of pearl inlays.

Mischievous and curious, the Raven plays many important roles in Pacific Northwest Coast Culture. For some, he symbolizes creation, transformation, knowledge, prestige as well as the complexity of nature and the subtlety of truth. He also symbolizes the unknown and shows that every person sees the world in a different way.

Bentwood boxes are unique to the First Nations people of the Northwest Coast. Boxes are made from a single plank of red or yellow cedar that is grooved on each corner, steam-bent, and then folded to form the four sides. The two ends are pegged together before the addition of the base and the lid.

With the red cedar lid, this box is about 10 3 4 inches or 27.5 centimeters high and about 10 inches or 25.5 cm wide on each side at the base. Without the lid, the box is about 9 1 4 inches or 23.5 cm in height.
